The Study is a unique home-stay English academy that offers English for academic purposes/university preparation seminars of uncompromising quality and rigor. Our goal is to prepare you for the challenges and opportunities of overseas study by strengthening and enriching the core areas of academic English that are essential for success at universities in the English speaking world.
To prepare you for academic success abroad, we offer seminars in four key areas of English—the core knowledge you need to achieve your goals. Our curriculum and teaching methods have been tested and perfected over 15 years and have proven effective for hundreds of international students. With only six seminar participants, you experience the kind of personal attention that is usually only possible in very expensive one-to-one tutorials.
Our academic director, Professor I.G. MacDonald, was awarded a Bachelor of Arts (honours) degree from Queen’s University in Canada in 1997, a Master of Arts degree in 1999, and in 2003 he passed the comprehensive examination for a Ph.D. From 2005 until he retired in 2016, Professor MacDonald was Senior Foreign Professor of English Composition and Rhetoric in Dankook University’s Department of English Language and Literature, Graduate School of English Education,Department of Anglo-American Humanities, Graduate School of TESOL, and adjunct English language professor at the Korean Institute of Justice.
In sum, our English for Academic Purposes (EAP) program strengthens and enriches the following core academic areas:
Reading, listening and critical thinking
Vocabulary, grammar and structure
Composition and rhetoric
Research, presentation, and debate
In addition to our intensive academic English program, we also conduct Cambridge English Examination and Test of Legal English preparation classes. With a combined 25 years of experience, our teachers can help you successfully prepare for these high-stakes English examinations.
We offer Cambridge English preparation study sessions from Elementary (A2) to Advanced (C1), with each level requiring approximately 120 hours or 4 weeks of study. Cambridge English helps you to learn English and prove your English language skills. Preparing for a Cambridge English exam will give you the confidence and skills to communicate with people from all over the world. Over 20,000 organisations accept the Cambridge English certificates worldwide including leading companies, universities and ministries like Deloitte,Volkswagen, McGill University Canada and Immigration New Zealand.
Our examination preparation seminars are in session continuously, so you can begin at any time that is convenient. We will assess your level when you arrive and then mentor you as you prepare for the appropriate examination.
Our International Legal English seminars, suitable for B2 and C1 level students, require 120 hours (4 weeks) of intensive study and begin on the first Monday of every month.

Professor MacDonald is a powerful writing teacher who is always well prepared, enthusiastic, and professional. From his courses Creative and Discursive Writing and English Composition at DKU, I have gained the knowledge of how a academic writing should look like and the practical application. I highly recommend him for those who would like to learn English in an academic and professional level.

Professor Ian Macdonald was both a professor of mine as an MA TESOL student at DKU in South Korea and a colleague for many years in the same department after I was hired as a professor. He was always dedicated to his work and a knowledgable and kind mentor. His work in English linguistics including in the areas of syntax and rhetoric were exemplary and he lectures on academic writing demonstrated his passion for his subject matter. I highly recommend his courses for anyone who has an interest in improving their writing skills, particularly for those whose first language is not English looking to study and/or work in English speaking countries.

Professor MacDonald is the best teacher I have had. I have studied English for many years but still had mistakes and difficulties. Professor MacDonald helped with my grammar and conversation skills. My English has drastically improved and I was able to get a job that requires fluent English!
